OXFORD, Miss. – A big field and a hot day were daunting opponents for Lipscomb track and field at Saturday’s Ole Miss Invite, but the Bison and Lady Bison soldiered through for high marks.
Sophomore Tucker Peabody had a big day in the sprints. He finished fifth in the men’s 100m dash with a personal-best 10.60s run. He’s approaching Robert Smith’s school-best 10.54s 100m mark in the event.
Later in the day, Peabody finished eighth in the 200m dash with a 21.39s mark.
“Tucker did a good job in both the 100m and the 200m events,” said Lipscomb assistant coach Luke Syverson. “He had a couple of missteps in the 200m but was still close to his personal best.”
Sophomore Dani Walker was runner-up in the 800m run. Her 2:13.90s mark was less than a second behind the winner.
“Dani had a tough 1500m run, but came back strong in the 800m,” Syverson said.
In the throws, junior Taylor Mason finished eighth in the javelin with a 36.42m (119’ 6”) throw. Senior Austin Ray was 11th in the men’s event with a 49.34m (161’ 10”) toss.
Junior Adam Austin earned a top-10 finish in the high jump, finishing seventh with a 1.95m (6’ 4.75”) height. Classmate O’Neisha Smith posted a ninth-place, 1.60m (5’ 3”) mark in the women’s event.
Freshman Matthew Deery earned a ninth-place tie in the pole vault with a 4.55m (14’ 11”) mark. He was also 12th in the 110m hurdles with a school-record 15.26s mark.
“All in all, I think it went well,” Syverson said. “There was a bit of an adjustment for some due to the heat and the size of the field. It gave our athletes a good chance to get ready for the conference meet.”
The Bison and Lady Bison track and field teams return to action at next weekend’s Auburn Tiger Track Classic. A small group will also head to Palo Alto, Calif. for the Stanford Invite.
