The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2012 Academic All-District softball teams, Friday. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl was named to the District III team.
Kiihnl, who went 22-12 with a 1.79 ERA and 211 strike outs in 39 appearances for the Lady Bisons this season, leading Lipscomb to a 34-18 record and a four-seed in next week’s Atlantic Sun softball tournament.
A three-time all-conference selection, Kiihnl was a 2010 NFCA All-American and is Lipscomb’s all-time leader in victories, strike outs, shutouts and complete games.
She’s the first Lady Bison softball player to earn an All-District honor from CoSIDA since Kellie Sirus and Lauren Dortwegt in 2010. Sirus went on to earn Academic All-American honors; Kiihnl is now a candidate for Academic All-American, with voting concluding May 15. The team will be announced May 24.
Recently, Kiihnl was named the recipient of Lipscomb’s James R. Byers Award for outstanding Christian leadership and academic and athletic success.
Kiihnl graduated Saturday with a 3.63 GPA in biology. She will attend Harding University in the fall to begin training as a physician’s assistant.
Kiihnl and the rest of the Lady Bisons begin the conference tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C. against Jacksonville.
