NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Needing a win to clinch a berth in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, the Lipscomb baseball team ran into a buzz saw on Friday night falling 5-0 to rival Belmont at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville.
The Bisons (25-29, 14-12 A-Sun) failed to get anything going against Belmont (34-21, 16-10 A-Sun) starter Matt Hamann (5-5), who did not allow a base runner past first base until the ninth inning.
Hamann kept the Lipscomb offense off balance for nine innings notching 10 strikeouts while allowing only four hits and a trio of walks in the complete-game, shutout performance.
Lipscomb redshirt-junior starter Josh Cotham (5-5) kept the Bisons in the game with a quality start. The veteran allowed two runs and only three hits while walking four. Cotham added five strikeouts.
The Bruins broke the game open in the eighth inning after launching three home runs off Lipscomb junior reliever Tyler Burstrom.
Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand was ejected in the seventh inning and could be unavailable for Saturday’s contest.
With the loss, the Bisons head into the final day of the regular season needing a win over the Bruins or a loss by either Florida Gulf Coast or Mercer to earn a tournament berth.
The Bisons wrap up the series against the Bruins on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park.
