TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-The Lipscomb Bisons cross country team placed 16th in the NCAA South Regional Friday morning in Tallahassee, Fla.
The 10-K race was held at Apalachee Regional Park and was hosted by Florida State University.
Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor decided to enter only five runners, three of them freshmen.
Florida State won the men’s race.
“For us to bring just five guys down here to get experience, and to see them run loose and fast was amazing,” Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor said. “To see them take chances and run up front and to finish 16th was more than I expected!
“It was a big performance for a young men's team that has an extremely bright future. This is a big statement by the men."
Sophomore Ryan Gadsey led the Bisons with a time of 32:16.6 and finished in 60th place. Freshman Daniel Gardner finished 72nd (32:37.7) followed by freshman Fidel Leon in 80th (32:45.6), senior Ben Wright in 98th (33:07.9) and freshman Jared Wingerter in 145th (34:16.8).
“Ryan was up with the leaders more than halfway through the race,” Taylor said. “Though he faded a bit late, he learned how to race with the top runners in our region.
“Fidel and Daniel ran impressive 10-K freshman debuts. They were tough and showed they have a very bright future ahead of them. Ben Wright ran his best race of the year...maybe of his career. He ran his all-time 5-K at the 5-K split. Actually I think Ryan and a lot of the guys ran their 5-K PRs in this 10-K.”
