The Lipscomb Lady Bisons golf team placed second Tuesday in the Time Warner Racer Classic after weather conditions forced the cancellation of the second day of play.
Only the first round scores for the seven-team tournament were counted after rain and cold forced stoppage of the second round. Two LU players finished in the top 10. MacKenzy Carter tied for fifth with a 79. Savanna Schubert scored 80 to tie for seventh.
Murray State fired a team score of 312. The Lady Bisons shot a 321 at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky.
"The conditions were very tough," Lady Bisons coach Buddy Harston said. "I am extremely proud of the way they hung in there and kept playing."
Rounding out the team scoring for the Purple and Gold were Miriam Parker and Sami Khan who each shot 81 to tie for 11th and Danielle Grace with an 85.
Harston cited the extra work by his players on their short games for much of the success.
"It is beginning to pay dividends," Harston said. "Their basic fundamentals are more polished.
"MacKenzy Cater and Miriam Parker have improved their chipping the most. Chipping is the defense of golf."
Sabrina Ferreri with an 89 and Sarah McFarlin with a 91 played as individuals and were not part of the team score.
Harston is especially encouraged by the mental preparation of his players.
"We have a saying that `Advanced technique is fundamentals mastered'," Harston said. "They are doing a better job of paying attention to the smallestdetails like ball position, hand position, alignment and weight distribution.
"And by setting up the same way each time it is giving them confidence to strike the ball solidly."
