DES MOINES, Iowa - Grant Stromberg led a trio of Lipscomb runners in the 5,000-meter run Thursday night at the U.S.A. Junior Nationals at Drake University.
Stromberg finished 12th in a field of 27 runners with a time of 15:28.83. Thomas Awad from Penn won the race with a time of 15:00.67.
"Grant matched Dani Walker's 12th place finish in the Women's 5000m U.S.A. Junior Nationals,” Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor said. “Dani has certainly had a great career so far. I think Grant should be really happy.”
Lipscomb’s Jared Wingerter crossed the finish line in a time of 15:39.38 to finish 20th. Teammate Daniel Gardner finished 21st with a time of15:45.26.
"The guys ran hard,” Taylor said. “It's so tough to race a national championship off rest and less than three weeks of easy distance runs. We knew that. I was looking for effort and toughness.
"All three guys were right in the big lead pack for most of the race. They put all they had out there tonight and they come away as stronger competitors for the future.”
The track season is over, but the three will still be in training.
"Now we can put all of our mental focus on the upcoming cross country season," Taylor said.
The highlight of the season will be the Atlantic Sun Championship hosted by Lipscomb.
