MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Lipscomb men’s tennis team displayed quality play against UAB.
Recording three singles victories and one doubles victory Friday, the Bisons proceed to the second day of the Dale Short Shootout 2013 at Middle Tennessee.
The tournament focuses on individual play. In the singles competition, junior Stuart Tierney played Mitchell Martell and after a long fought battle beat Martell in the third set 6-1.
Tierney displayed a great combination of consistency and mental strength on the court that led him to victory playing third in the lineup.
Another tremendous display in singles was by freshman Rob Mitchell from England.
It was the first college match experience for Mitchell and he showed great endurance playing against Lucas Dirube, acquiring victory in the third set. The final score was 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 for Mitchell who played fourth in the singles.
Sophomore John Tougher from Ireland added another victory for Lipscomb by defeating Nick Iannuzzi in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 6-4 playing at No. 5.
David Salazar at No. 1, Daniel Hernandez at No. 2 and Nacor Ibanez at No. 6 lost their matches.
In doubles competition, Tougher and Mitchell defeated Luiz Felipe Pinto and Nick Iannuzzit 8-5.
Lipscomb coach Mario Hernandez praised the UAB tennis program.
“Our team started with a great attitude and ended up with some great victories this evening,” coach Hernandez said. “We hope to make it a productive weekend, ultimately moving towards our main goal.”
The Bisons were scheduled to play Southern Illinois Saturday at 9 a.m. They close the tournament with Middle Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
