EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -The Lipscomb women’s golf team placed second in the DoubleTree Invitational in Edwardsville, Ill. on Tuesday after posting a 642 for the tournament (321-321).
Five Lady Bisons finished the invitational in the top 20.
After shooting a 79 in round one, Sami Khan fired a 75 on Tuesday to take home first place overall with a 154 (plus-10).
“I am really proud of Sami Khan,” said head coach Buddy Harston. “She worked really, really hard this summer on her game and that is a big reason why she won this tournament.”
Khan’s win was the first of her career. It also was the first win by a Lipscomb women’s golfer in its NCAA era.
Miriam Parker shot 81 in round two for a total of 159 (78-81). Her plus-15 score placed her in a tie for sixth overall.
“I am really proud of this team,” said Harston. “In our first tournament of the year, we putted atrociously. It was just one three-putt after another.
“We committed to getting better on the greens and every day we have worked for 45 minutes on our putting and it obviously helped.”
Savanna Schubert posted an 80-83 over two days to finish in a tie for 14th.
Morgan Bucher bettered her first round score of 84, with an 82 in the second. Her 166 was good enough to place her in a tie for 19th overall.
Playing as an individual, MacKenzy Carter tied Bucher for 19th with a 166 (80-86). Of the ten individuals, Carter finished first by one stroke over Brittney Jostes of SIUE.
Sabrina Ferreri carded rounds of 94-88 for a 182, placing her 53rd.
Valparaiso University finished first in team scoring with scores of 324-315 for a 639 overall.
Lipscomb bested host SIU Edwardsville by five strokes to take second place.
“It is always disappointing to finish second, especially when we were leading after round one,” said Harston. “It was great to be in the hunt.
“To finish second out of 10 teams, and for us to be disappointed, is a good sign. That means that only bigger and better things are in store for this team.”
Harston believes the sky is the limit for his team this season if they keep improving.
“It all comes down to how much you work as a team, and we have worked very hard,” Harston said. “I think this is the best group of girls I have had at Lipscomb so far.”
Next up for the Lady Bisons is the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 14-15 in Clarksville, Tenn.
