NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team has an opportunity to do something that has never been done before in its program’s history - to qualify for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Lady Bisons are in the sixth and final slot for the conference tournament. The three remaining teams on the Lady Bisons schedule are all ranked lower in the standings with ETSU two points back, USC Upstate seven points back and Saturday’s opponent, Northern Kentucky, eight points back.
The Norse are 4-10-1 overall but 0-6-0 in the A-Sun in their second year in NCAA Division I. Sami Rutowski and Allison Ponzer each have three goals to lead the Norse. Goalkeeper Tanner Ruberg has 64 saves and a 1.75 goals against average, having given up 25 goals this season.
A year ago NKU beat LU 5-2 in the regular season finale and first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The difference of a year can be huge. The Lady Bisons are led by freshman Ellen Lundy who ranks sixth in DI with 13 goals and 12th with 29 points. She was recently named the 68th best freshman in the country, and top overall in the A-Sun in the Top Drawer Soccer Midseason Freshman 100.
Goalkeeper Anna Buhigas is having a stellar freshman campaign of her own as she ranks 13th in the nation with 86 saves. She ranks second in the A-Sun stopping 82 percent of shots that come her way and third with an 1.20 goals against average.
Lipscomb (5-6-4, 2-2-2 A-Sun) has already set a season record for wins in a year and tied the previous conference-best record with two wins. The Lady Bisons continue to push to new heights in head coach Kevin O’Brien’s second year. The Purple and Gold control their own destiny going forward when looking at the A-Sun Championships.
Saturday’s game can be seen for free on ASun.TV.
