MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Deahna Welcher posted the lone victory for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons as they closed out the fall in the USTA/ITA Regionals in Memphis.
Welcher played three singles matches, including the main draw against Anna Gerbasi from ETSU and lost 2-6, 1-6.
Welcher added a victory in the singles back draw by defeating Omella Di Salvo from Austin Peay in a three-set fight, finally taking over with scores of 5-6, 6-5 and 6-1.
“Welcher fought off three match points in her second match to split sets and pull out the win,” Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid said. “Day one was an adjustment day and the second day was a much better adjustment and resulted in a win.”
Welcher’s journey in the USTA/ITA regionals ended with a defeat against Nayara Moraes from Middle Tennessee State. Welcher had been battling through an injury, but she stepped up and showed tremendous mental strength in her match on Sunday.
In doubles, Welcher-Jenny Borck lost both matches. In the main draw Welcher/Borck lost 4-8 to Repic-Guevremont from Tennessee. In the back draw, Choo/ Gerbasi from ETSU defeated Welcher-Borck 6-2.
“The tournament went as well as it could have in the main draw,” Aid said. “Deahna won a match and lost a match. We had to alter the game plan and be aggressive on the first forehand she received because that was her strong side.”
Aid is proud of how the girls supported each other and continued to grow with each other off the court.
“We are blessed with a great group of girls,” Aid said. “The leadership from our juniors Borck and Welcher has set the tone for the year. The team knows the goals and they keep each other accountable.”
