NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s team advanced to 5-2 for the season taking down Austin Peay 4-3 Saturday night at the Whitworth Racquet Club.
"We are happy with the win,” said Lipscomb women’s tennis coach Jamie Aid. “We did a good job tonight at finishing. Moving into this week we want to work on our doubles, as we still fell short in doubles tonight.”
Sophomore Lorena Djuknic clinched the match by defeating ASPU’s Hannah Tatlock in straight sets 6-4,6-3.
“ I was a little bit nervous when I realized that it was all up to me to bring a victory for the Lady Bisons tonight”, said Djuknic. “Luckily I had my team by my side to go through this battle.”
Djuknic has worked a great deal on the mental aspects of the game this season. Aid commended Djuknic on her approach to the key match.
“Lorena had a great amount of maturity,” Aid said. “That was a hard situation to play in but she was able to execute and clinch the match for us. We were overly proud.”
Austin Peay won the doubles point taking two of three matches.
Melissa Kromer and Laura Kent at No. 2 bagged the only doubles victory for Lipscomb by defeating the pair of Vanessa Tavaress and Isabela Javanovic 6-1.
“We have started getting very comfortable with each other and trusting in our games,” said Kromer.
The Lady Bisons won four of the six singles matches.
Deahna Welcher at No. 1 came out with some aggressive shots and downed ASPU’s Andra Cornea in a tough tiebreaker with the score of 3-6,6-2 (10-6).
Kromer at No. 2 lost to ASPU’s Ornella Di Salvo in a super tiebreaker 8-10 after splitting sets 2-6, 6-3.
“I did not start off that good but I fought back into the super tiebreaker,” Kromer said. “Heading into conference matches I will be confident enough in my strokes to pull these matches out.”
Laura Kent added another singles victory to Lipscomb’s record by defeating Vanessa Tavaress with ease 6-1, 6-0.
“Last weekend Laura Kent was a little bit off but this week we have really worked on her owning her aggressive style game,” Aid said. “She came out playing the best tennis she has this season. We saw her game style through the entire match and we love seeing that amount of consistency in a match.”
Kent agreed with Aid that her style of play was exactly what was needed.
“I was playing aggressive and was going for my shots,” Kent said. “I was confident in executing.”
Junior Jenny Borck at No.4 played with fantastic variation in her shots and downed ASPU’s Jovana Karac 6-3, 6-2.
The tough preconference schedule continues next weekend.
“We are rolling into an SEC match against Ole Miss on the road,” Aid said. “This will be a great test to see how we play against a top- 30 program.”
