NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb pitcher Tanner Sanders is getting her share of recognition in the second week of the season.
In addition to being named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year this past week for her 3-0 performance, including two shutouts at the Getterman Classic at Baylor, Sanders has garnered some national notice as well.
Sanders, a sophomore right-hander from Flintville, Tenn., has been named to the “Primetime Performers” Weekly Honor Roll by the College Softball 360 website and was a “Selected Top Performer” by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Sanders shutout Iowa and then No. 14-ranked Baylor and also came on in relief to stop UAB. She is 5-0 with three complete games and a 1.48 earned run average for the Lady Bisons this season.
“Any time we get some individual recognition early on in a season it is recognition of how our team is doing,” Ryman said. “Tanner has played a crucial role in what we have been doing, but it is a reflection of what we are doing as a team and the fight in our team right now.”
Ryman also points to third baseman Paige Neely who is batting .500 and to left fielder Brianne Welch and catcher Rena’ Cothron who are batting .333 and .318 respectively.
The strong start for Sanders has been crucial since she was sidelined for most of the fall with an injury after putting together a strong freshman year. Ryman wanted Sanders to work with new pitching coach Megan Rhodes Smith and become an even stronger force this spring.
“When Tanner had the injury and missed every fall and most of the fall pitching work, it kind of put a damper on things,” Ryman said. “It was really important for her, more from a mentality standpoint, to come out and have a great start like she has had this season.
“It is easy for you to feel good about yourself from a confidence standpoint, how you are helping the team and how they are playing behind you. She is feeling confidence. It is easier to go out and do your thing. Again I think that is reflective on how our team is playing.”
