Day One: Representing Some of the Best
On Thursday afternoon two friends headed to Colorado Springs to chase some dreams and represent one special volleyball team.
Lauren, Billy, and I touched Olympian ground around 8 p.m. Upon our arrival, we were checked in and photographed for an extremely cheesy picture for our OTC ID badge. In the midst of our excitement, Lauren and I felt the need to take pictures with everything, from the American flag at the entrance to the coffee machine in the lobby.
As if our excitement was not already at its peak, a spotting of a famous (and attractive) gold medalist swimmer in the dining hall blew the excitement off the charts. But no need to worry, we played it cool while eating in the same room as the one and only Michael Phelps.
Our first try-out session began at 2 p.m. and completely consisted of competition. Although it was evident that we were playing with some of the best (and tallest) in the nation, we did not let our size keep us from holding our own on the court. Being led by Karch Kiraly, the USA Women’s National Team head coach, we competed for a total of two hours of fun and intense play.
Along with having a blast on our first day on the court, we also made some friends from all over the country—Cincinnati, ETSU, Northern Alabama, Kansas University, American, and Duke, just to name a few.
Saturday we will be early risers as our first session starts at 8 a.m.
Lauren and I are embracing every moment while feeling immensely blessed to bring a part of Lipscomb Volleyball to the soil of some of the best athletes in the country.
As all three of us explored the grounds earlier in the day, it was clear to us that the daily hard work, the struggle, the triumph, and the incredible stories of the best American athletes resonated in the center.
We will wake up Saturday morning inspired by these stories, hoping to emulate those same qualities that embody the special program that we represent.
