NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team will be a family affair in terms of coaching.
Head coach Mario Hernandez, entering his second year at the helm of the program, has announced that his brother, Geoff Hernandez, will be serving this year as a volunteer assistant coach, his first coaching assignment on the college level.
“Geoff has a passion for the game,” Mario said. “He has experience as a college player and on the pro tour. He has the mentality it takes to train and work hard. He has a desire to succeed.”
Geoff, 25, played the majority of his tennis in the Pacific Northwest, primarily in Western Canada. He was the No. 1 junior in British Columbia in 16's and 18's while reaching a ranking of No. 2 in Canada for 16 and under.
“I am originally from Houston, but we moved to Vancouver when I was 15,” Geoff said.
He also competed in the USTA Pacific Northwest junior tournaments reaching a No. 1 ranking in the 18s playing in national and international junior events.
Collegiately, he played four years for the University of Portland Pilots. He was team captain his junior and senior seasons. He played the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in both singles and doubles.
Portland earned the schools’ best-ever ranking of No. 45 in NCAA Division I his senior year.
After graduating, Geoff competed on the ITF Futures Tour for a year and also made some ATP Challenger appearances.
He has coached at the EHIT tennis club in East Hampton, New York in 2013. He also worked for the West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club in Portland, Oregon where he worked in junior development for around nine months.
“I really wanted the opportunity to work with Mario,” Geoff said. “It was something we had been talking about. It was just a matter of putting the pieces together for creating a team we think will win.
“This is a great opportunity for me. I want to help put Lipscomb tennis on the map. I think with what Mario is doing we are in the process of doing that in taking it to the next level.”
He majored in organizational communications.
Geoff is single and lives in Nashville.
