Meyer meets with Wooden at ESPYs
Former Lipscomb University basketball coach Don Meyer received the “Jimmy V Award for Perseverance” from EPSN at the ESPY Awards Wednesday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The awards ceremony will be shown Sunday night on ESPN with actor Samuel L. Jackson serving as host. The time is 8 p.m. CDT.

Lipscomb athletics director Philip Hutcheson and Wade Tomlinson, both players under Meyer, were present at the awards ceremony.

Meyer was the featured speaker April 28 at the inaugural Don Meyer "Evening of Excellence" at Allen Arena. The event also served as the official kick-off for the National Bison Club, which provides support for 17 varsity athletics programs. Andy Lane is serving as the executive director. Plans are already underway for the 2010 "Evening of Excellence".

The inaugural event attracted approximately 600 for a VIP dinner and more than 2,000 to hear his keynote speech.

Meyer, the men’s basketball coach at Northern State, is battling cancer and lost a leg as the result of serious injuries from an automobile accident. The award is named for the late Jim Valvano, who coached at North Carolina State and died after a courageous battle with cancer.

The ESPY Awards honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year.
