Deland, Fla._ The top seeded Lady Bisons got off to a slow start in the 2008 A-Sun Tournament, dropping their first game against Gardner-Webb 3-2.
Senior first baseman Heather Collins put the Lady Bisons on the board first, blasting a long four-bagger over the left field fence to lead off the second inning.
In the top of the fourth inning the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead. Left fielder Jessi Williams knocked a solo shot over the center field fence, and first baseman Christa Fullwood scored on a bases loaded walk.
Melody Harrell hit a solo home run over the center field fence to make the score 3-1 one inning later.
The Lady Bisons threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth inning, placing sophomore Center fielder Lauren Dortwegt on second, but were unable to bring her across the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth inning sophomore third baseman Christen Campbell shot a dinger over the left center fence to make the score 3-2.
Senior Kim Jacobson took the start and pitched three innings for the Lady Bisons, allowing two runs to take the loss.
With the tying run on second base, bulldog pitcher Taryn Beck managed to get senior left fielder Sara Simons to strike out and end the game.
"Going into the tournament we talked about how we had to perform in all parts of our game," said head coach Kristin Peck. "Our hitters, our pitchers and, our defense all have to be on top of their game. We had some errors that hurt us, some runners that didn't need to get on base and some big hits against us. It's tough when you lose a one run game and your pitchers didn't do what they needed to."
"We are going to have to fight like crazy the rest of the tournament. The character of our team will show through. So far this year, the Lipscomb softball team has done quite a few things that no other Lipscomb softball team has done. Another one of those things is to win an A-Sun Tournament game. If we can do that, it will put is in position to continue to play in the tournament."
The Lady Bisons (29-25 overall, 16-7 A-Sun) are in action at 3 p.m. CDT today when they take on the loser of the Campbell-Stetson matchup.
