Tuesday, March 17, 2009The Auburn Tigers, a Southeastern Conference foe, showed their respect for the Lady Bisons program by sending ace to the mound.
Tuesday night at Draper Diamond Auburn right-hander Anna Thompson held the Lady Bisons to only three hits, but she could not get the shut out, settling for a 5-1 win. The Lady Bisons wore green T-shirts in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, but the luck of the Irish couldn't help them.
Thompson, 11-5, threw a complete game, striking out 10.
The Lady Bisons got two hits in the third inning on singles by Lauren Dortwegt and Courtney Billington.
The third hit was in the sixth inning. After Kellie Sirus walked with two outs Abby Keese hit a fly over the head of Auburn’s center fielder for an RBI-double.
It was the 23rd RBI of the season for Keese who had a team-high 37 runs batted in last season. Keese, who had a nine-game hitting streak earlier in the season, has a three-game streak, the longest current streak on the team.
The run prevented the Lady Bisons from suffering their second shut out of the season. Their only previous shut out loss was Feb. 14, a 4-0 loss to Nicholls State in the Louisiana Classics Tournament.
Auburn quickly took control offensively with one run in the first, two in the second and two in the third.
Alaina Jacobson, 6-3, started the game for the Lady Bisons. In the third inning with no outs and two Auburn runners on base Whitney Kiihnl entered the game. She walked the first batter she faced to load the bases and then walked the next batter she faced to bring in a run. Auburn would score their second run of the inning and the final run of the game on a wild pitch.
After that rough start Kiihnl settled down and struck out the side to end the inning.
She held Auburn scoreless the rest of the way, striking out seven, scattering three hits and walking three in five innings.
It was the lowest hit total of the season for the Lady Bisons who came into the game with 10 hits in each of their previous two games. The Lady Bisons had four hits against Nicholls State in the 4-0 loss.
The Lady Bisons face Bradley Wednesday at Draper Diamond in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
