The Lady Bisons relied on pitching and four big hits to put them past their Atlantic Sun rivals, East Tennessee State, Friday afternoon in Johnson City. Lipscomb came out on top both games of the doubleheader, with a score of 3-0 the first game and 3-1 in the second.
Game one remained scoreless until the 4th inning. With two outs, Junior Christen Campbell hit a line drive home run over the left field fence, her third of the season, putting Lipscomb up 1-0 over the Lady Bucs.
Freshman outfielder Caroline Mason added to the lead the next inning, crushing her third home run of the season. Junior Abby Keese brought the score to 3-0 with a home run over left field, bringing her home run total to seven on the season.
Three runs were all the Bisons would need, as freshman pitcher Whitney Kiihnl (12-5) held the Bucs scoreless, fanning nine and giving up only one hit, a bunt, over seven innings.
“We know there are going to be a lot of pitching duels from here on out,” said Lady Bisons coach Kristin Peck. “There are a lot of good pitchers in our conference, and Whitney is one of them. To see her doing what she’s been doing as a freshman is very reassuring.”
The Lady Bisons struck early in game two, as freshman Courtney Billington reached first base on an error by ETSU’s center fielder. After stealing second, Billington scored on a single to left field by Keese.
Lipscomb added to their one run lead in the 5th inning, as junior infielder Kellie Sirus hit her fifth home run of the season.
ETSU fought back in the bottom of the 5th, as Lady Bucs’ shortstop Cheniece Cason singled and then stole second. Catcher Trisha Massenzo singled to center to score Cason, pushing across their first run of the day.
Leading 2-1 going into the top of the 7th, sophomore Mackenzie Tucker singled to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Dortwegt. An infield single from Billington pushed Tucker to third, with Sirus up to bat. A line drive to center would score Tucker and give the Bisons a 3-1 advantage that held them for the rest of the game.
Campbell (8-0) got the win on the mound for the Bisons, scattering six hits over six innings. Kiihnl got the save., her first of the season.
“In our conference, any time we can get a sweep is a big deal,” said Peck. “To get that sweep on the road against a rival team that we’ve never swept means a lot. It really puts into perspective where we are in our program right now.”
The Lady Bisons are 27-8 on the season, 6-2 in the A-Sun.
The Lady Bucs fall to 21-18, 3-9 in the A-Sun.
Lipscomb continues conference play Sunday at noon at USC-Upstate. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was delayed one day to to weather conditions in Spartanburg, S.C.
