Saturday, March 20, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons carried a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning, but gave up two runs in the seventh to host Hawaii to close out the Spring Fling in Honolulu with a 5-4 loss Saturday afternoon.
The game was played under an overcast sky with a drizzle.
Abby Keese, Courtney Billington, Mackenzie Tucker and Whitney Kiihnl were named to the All-Tournament team in a vote of the coaches and the media.
Hawaii opened the scoring with two runs and added one run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Bisons took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Christen Campbell singled up the middle to start the inning. Megan Rottler flied out to left field. Kiihnl singled to the pitcher. Lauren Dortwegt then singled to right field, scoring Campbell. Tucker got her second hit of the game, a single up the middle that scored Kiihnl. Dortwegt scored the third run from third on a wild pitch. Tucker also scored the fourth run on a wild pitch.
Hawaii capitalized on a pair of errors by the Lady Bisons in the seventh. Kelly Majam hit a home run to tie the game with one out. With two outs the Lady Bisons had a fielding error by first baseman Kellie Sirus who dropped a foul ball. A fielding error by Keese allowed Melissa Gonzalez, who had been intentionally walked, to score the game-winner. Gonzalez had hit one of Hawaii's three home runs in the game.
The Lady Bisons out-hit Hawaii eight-to-six. Tucker and Kiihnl each had two hits to lead the Lady Bisons.
Campbell pitched 6.2 innings to the Lady Bisons. She walked two and struck out three. Campbell slipped to 4-2.
The Lady Bisons opened the Spring Fling with a 1-0 win over No. 12-ranked California-Berkeley, but lost the next five games.
The Lady Bisons are 20-7. Hawaii is 22-10.
The Lady Bisons are not back in action until March 26 when they play ETSU in the first Atlantic Sun doubleheader of the season at Draper Diamond.. They will play USC Upstate March 27.
