Friday, April 16, 2010The Lady Bisons added on to their shutout record today at Draper Diamond beating Stetson 5-0 and 1-0 in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader.
The shutouts were the 21st and 22nd of the season for the Lady Bisons.
Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl came out firing, striking out the first three batters on the visiting side. She continued to dominate throughout the seven innings as she only gave up one hit and struck out 10.
The Lady Bisons scored right away in game one, as Lauren Dortwegt got on base with a single and then was eventually knocked in by Kellie Sirus.
Sirus continued to rack up her RBI count, as she hit a three-run homer in the third inning, her 10th of the season.
"Kellie is starting to hit the ball a lot better," Lady Bisons coach Kristin Ryman said. "We have high expectations for Kellie, and she does for herself. She's really starting to feel a lot more comfortable in the box and today was another example of how she's getting back into her groove."
Abby Keese had a solo home run in the fifth inning, and continues to lead the A-Sun with 11 home runs.
Game two proved to be closer for the Lady Bisons, as Christen Campbell took the mound for the first four innings.
The game remained scoreless until a solo shot from Courtney Billington over the left field fence to put the Lady Bisons on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Kiihnl relieved Campbell at the start of the fifth inning and held the shut out for Lipscomb, throwing the final three innings.
Campbell gave up five hits over four innings. She is 9-4.
Kiihnl struck out five and did not allow a hit.
"Whitney is that next level pitcher for us," Ryman said. "Whit shut them down the first game. They really struggled with her. We thought it was a smart move to go ahead and get Whitney back in there."
With today's wins, the Lady Bisons improve to 35-9 on the season and 12-2 in the A-Sun.
Stetson ended a five-game winning streak and falls to 24-19 overall and an even 6-6 in conference play.
"These wins were huge," Ryman said. "Stetson pitches as well as anybody in the league and they have had strong hitting lately. So to get these wins today was extremely important for us. Now we have two more big ones tomorrow."
The Lady Bisons take on Florida Gulf Coast, 22-26 overall, 10-6 in the A-Sun, in a doubleheader Saturday at Draper Diamond at noon. Both games will be featured live on ASun-TV.
