A doubleheader always features two games, but in the case of the Lipscomb Lady Bison it also means two teams.
Coach Kristin Ryman has seen enough of the one that shows up for game one. She would definitely like to see more of the team that hits the field for game two.
Friday night at Draper Diamond against Florida Gulf Coast the Lady Bison lost the first game 1-0 and then came back to win the second one 14-5, a game that was called after 4-1/2 innings due to the eight-run rule.
“It’s a difference in our mentality,” Ryman said. “The girls may not see it or notice it in themselves, but we notice it. Everybody notices it from people in the stands, to coaches to people in the press box.
“It is a noticeable difference to how we approach game one. We’ve got to not be as passive. We have to out and attack pitches.”
It marked the third straight Atlantic Sun doubleheader loss by a score of 1-0 in game one. In each instance the Lady Bison have rallied to win game two.
Ryman is hopeful that string will end Saturday when Stetson visits for a doubleheader starting at 2.
“I didn’t feel like there was a sense of urgency in game one until late in the game,” Ryman said. “I felt like then we had better bats and better cuts. We can’t afford to not have that sense of urgency from the beginning. We have to find a way to separate ourselves from the pack.”
The tough luck pitcher in all three of those first-game losses has been senior Whitney Kiihnl, whose only non-shutout inning was an unearned run in the sixth. The Lady Bison had only two hits, singles by Kelsey Cartwright and Mollie Mitchell against Florida Gulf Coast pitcher Shelby Morgan. In the three losses they have managed only six hits in support of Kiihnl.
“Yes, we are going to see better pitching in game one,” Ryman said. “That’s a given. We have some of the best hitting in the conference.
“We are being passive on good pitches and chasing bad pitches or getting caught looking. We have to go out and attack the ball like we are doing in game two.”
Kiihnl gave up only three hits while striking out eight and walking three.
“Whitney has thrown great in all three of the 1-0 losses,” Ryman said. “We are getting what need out of her. She doesn’t really care about the personal stuff. She just wants the team to win.
“She is not going to be the one to say anything, but I would be frustrated if I was her. She has been in the trenches. She has been through games where she has thrown well and got the loss. And she has been in games where she didn’t throw as well and got the win.”
In game two Lipscomb left-hander Ashley Anderson scattered seven hits and gave up five runs, three earned. She struck out three and walked two for her sixth win of the season. Two of the runs she gave up were on solo home runs by Emily Lanier and Brittney Garabedian.
“There were a couple of times where I thought Ashley made some decent pitches and they made good swings,” Ryman said. “Ashley just has to find a way to keep us in games.”
No Lady Bison hit a home run, but they did hit three doubles in game two, including the first of the season for Gracey Aguirre and one by Bridgette Begle.
Aguirre and Caroline Mason tied for team lead in hits for the Lady Bison with three each. Aguirre drove in a game-high four runs. Mason, Haley Elliott and Begle each had two hits as the Lady Bison combined for 15 hits. Rena’ Cothron, Mason and Begle also had two RBI apiece.
The Lady Bison fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but scored four runs in the second. Both teams tallied a run in the fifth. In the fourth Florida Gulf Coast added another run for a 5-5 tie. But the Lady Bison exploded for nine runs in the fourth to ice the game.
The Lady Bison are 23-11, 3-3 in the A-Sun. Florida Gulf Coast is 23-21, 3-3 in the conference.
