On the road again! Yep, this past weekend we were on the road to my home state, Georgia, to play Kennesaw State. This trip was special for me because my home is about 20 minutes north of KSU, so many of my friends and family were able to come and cheer us on!
This trip was also a little different than our normal road trips because last week was spring break, so on our way down to Kennesaw we stopped in Chattanooga for one game with UTC. We played really well, and after that win we headed on down to Georgia Thursday night.
Because we didn’t play until Saturday, we had some time to kill Friday, and our coaches had a field trip planned for us. Now, normally we know exactly what we are doing every trip we go on, but the coaches wouldn’t tell us where we were going. Everyone was guessing all the way down to Atlanta, until we finally stopped at Turner Field, home of the Braves!
Now, not all of us are Braves fans, but many are, myself included. As a team we were able to tour Turner Field. We saw the stadium, the locker rooms, the media rooms (my favorite) and we got to walk out onto the warning track and sit in the visitor’s dugout! It was incredible. I have been to Turner Field many times, but this was the first time I got to see the ins and outs of it. So, after a long day of practice and touring we finished off our Friday with some of us going to support the baseball team as they beat KSU that night.
Saturday is game day, the best day of the week. I was especially excited about this game day because I have five former teammates who play for KSU. Playing old teammates is always fun, and it was a beautiful day. We started off the day strong with a solid 2-0 win the first game of the day. One thing we knew about Kennesaw going into the weekend was that their ace, Amanda Henderson, is a very good pitcher. She pitched well against us, but we were about to score two runs, the first was a home run by Haley Elliot.
The second game we won with a little more breathing room. Kennesaw threw their No. 2 pitcher and we won 5-0. Two shutouts against the same team, in the same day, on their field is awesome and really speaks to our pitchers and defense. Saturday our defense was flawless.
Sunday was a little bit different. Of course we were looking for the sweep, but unfortunately we fell short. After scoring four runs in the first inning, Kennesaw fought back and beat us 8-7 in the bottom of the 7th inning. It was a tough loss, and one of the toughest we have faced all year, but this team is not discouraged.
I love this team, and I love the mindset of this team. We all hate to lose, everyone does. But I think we understand that when we do lose we have to move on and look ahead. We made mistakes, but I have no doubt that we will learn from those and be even stronger in the future.
This week we will play Memphis on the road Wednesday night. Friday we are heading to South Carolina! That’s right, this weekend we finally get to play USC Upstate.
Upstate is a good team and a tough team, but so are we. After talking with the girls Sunday night, I have no doubts that we are going to come out strong this weekend. We are so excited to keep playing, and look forward to every game. This is going to be a tough weekend, but it is also one we have been looking forward to all season.
