NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons won four games this past week, but dropped five spots in this week’s NCAA RPI.

The Lady Bisons beat Western Kentucky 7-1 Wednesday night on the road and then swept Northern Kentucky in a three-game home series over the weekend.

Last week the Lady Bisons were 28th in the RPI, the highest ranking in the history of the program. This week they are 33rd.

USC Upstate is the highest rated Atlantic Sun Conference team at 26th.

Also in the top 50 are Mercer at 42nd and Stetson at 43rd.

The winner of the A-Sun Tournament, which will be played May 7-10 at Lipscomb’s Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium, will get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The A-Sun appears to be in a position to have a team earn an at-large bid as well.

According to an A-Sun press release, the average RPI of an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament in the last three years is 22.95.

Last year 10 at-large teams were chosen to participate in the NCAA Tournament with an RPI in the 30-50 range. In 2012, 12 teams had an RPI greater than 30 that were selected as at-large teams.

“This time of year you have to do everything to help yourself, but I also think you need to get help from other people,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “It is important for us to focus on what we can do to keep improving.

“It shows a lot about how far our program has come big picture-wise. It has really been neat to see where we have come from in 2006 when I started coaching to where we are now.  We are proving this is a program where you can be successful year in and year out.”

TSU game:  The scheduled game with Tennessee State for May 1 has been officially canceled. Barring a last minute schedule addition the Lady Bisons will not play again until the tournament.

Finals continue through Thursday and practice times are being adjusted to accommodate study and test times. After exams Ryman plans to continue with individual work and possibly have a one of two intra-squad scrimmages if no game can be scheduled.

“Overall we need to go back to work,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “We need to make sure we are comfortable and are seeing the ball and doing all of those little things that we work on every day. We have to take those things to heart and implement them in a live setting.”

National rankings: The Lady Bisons are ranked in the top 40 in NCAA Division I in three team categories.

They are 18th with a .780 won-loss percentage, 27th in scoring with an average of six runs per game and 35th with a 2.28 earned run average.

Individually, left-handed pitcher Ashley Anderson is 28th with a 1.44 ERA, 36th in victories with 19 and 41st in shutouts with six.

Brittany Elmore is 31st with an average of one run per game and 35th in stolen bases with .52 per game.

Paige Neely is 17th in sac flies with five.
