Playing two almost identical games Lipscomb's Lady Bisons softball team lost both games in the first round of the double-elimination Atlantic Sun Softball Championships at Florida Atlantic University Thursday.
After managing only two hits and losing 3-1 in the first game of the day against No. 4-seeded UCF, the No. 3-seeded Lady Bisons came back in the early evening to get two hits in a 3-1 loss to No.1-seed Troy University.
The Lady Bisons struck first in both games. Against Troy, they scored in the first inning. Leigh Little led off with a walk. Julia Davidson flied out to the catcher. With one out Jessica Wilson slammed a double to center field that scored Little. Candice McWherter also singled in the first inning.
Troy pitcher Kacie Flinn shut down the Lady Bisons the rest of the way. She struck out five batters and walked three.
Sara Meek started on the mound for the Lady Bisons. She pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. All three runs she allowed were unearned.
Danielle Catalano, who pitched six innings against UCF earlier in the day, closed out the final 2 2/3 innings. Catalano allowed three hits and struck out two. Neither Meek nor Catalano walked a batter.
Troy did all of their damage in the fourth inning. With one out and Tamra Howren on base on a fielder's choice Bonnie Belin doubled to right center. That brought Howren home with the tying run.
Brittany Krbec hit a fly to left field that was mishandled. Sally Jones then hit a double that bounced off the lower portion of the left field fence. Belin and Krbec both scored.
The Lady Bisons finished the season with a 27-24 record overall.
