DELAND, Fla. _ A quick start did not translate into a win for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons.
The No. 4-seeded Lady Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead, but fell 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh to the No. 3-seeded ETSU Lady Bucs Thursday morning in the opening game of the Atlantic Sun Conference Softball Championship at Patricia Wilson Field on the campus of Stetson University.
The tournament is a double-elimination format. The Lady Bisons will play at 7 p.m. CDT against Stetson, the No. 1 seed in the tournament..
Junior left fielder Leigh Little put the Lady Bisons on the scoreboard quickly with a solo home run over the left field fence in the first inning. It was her second home run of the season.
Niki Bails led the Lady Bisons in hitting with three singles in three trips to the plate. Collins and Little each had two hits. Collins has a seven-game hitting streak. Little extended her streak to three games.
Christen Campbell started on the mound for the Lady Bisons. She retired the first seven ETSU players. She did not give up a hit until the fourth inning.
In the fifth ETSU scored two runs on four hits to tie the game, setting the stage for the crucial seventh.
With one out in the seventh ETSU's Cheniece Cason singled to left. Stephanie Gaynord doubled to right center putting runners on second and third. Katy Jett walked to load the bases. Jessica Hackworth hit a fly ball to left that was misplayed allowing Cason to score the game-winning run.
Gaynord, Jett and Cason each had a pair of hits for ETSU.
Campbell, 17-15, allowed seven hits. She struck out four and walked three.
Freshman ETSU pitcher Marissa Hardy, 6-2, scattered nine hits. She struck out six and walked two.
The Lady Bisons will now face the host team and tournament #1 seed Stetson University in an elimination game for the Lady Bisons. The game time is set for 7:00 p.m. CT, and the Lady Bisons must win to stay alive in the tournament.
Earlier this season, the Lady Bisons traveled down to Deland, Fla. and defeated the Hatters in two out of three matchups.
