Thursday, April 14, 2011Winners of four straight, the Atlantic Sun-leading Lipscomb softball team will look to extend its winning streak Thursday as they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for a 4 p.m. CT afternoon doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast.
Following Thursday’s game against the Eagles, the Lady Bisons will remain in the Sunshine State to face Stetson on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in DeLand, Fla.
The Lady Bisons (22-14 overall, 9-1 A-Sun) are coming off a pair of dominating performances last weekend at Draper Diamond where they outscored Jacksonville and North Florida a combined 23-0 in four games at Draper Diamond. Lipscomb defeated then previously undefeated Jacksonville 4-0 in both games last Friday before topping UNF 7-0 and 8-0 on Saturday.
The story all season long has been the Lady Bisons ability to hit to the long ball especially in conference play. Lipscomb leads the Atlantic Sun in home runs with 39, featuring six players with at least five home runs on the year.
Outfielder Caroline Mason and catcher Mollie Mitchell lead the team with eight home runs, with seven of Mason’s coming in conference play.
Junior ace Whitney Kiihnl (16-7, 1.31 ERA) ranks near the top of the conference in nearly every pitching category. The Lipscomb All-American has 249 strikeouts in 160.1 innings this year and is holding opponents to a league best .168 batting average.
About FGCU: The Eagles (25-21 overall, 8-2 A-Sun) are playing red-hot as of late, including impressive sweeps against USC Upstate and ETSU last weekend. Courtney Platt picked up her second career A-Sun Player of the Week honor after batting .636 with 10 RBI in four games against USC Upstate and ETSU last weekend. Sophomore Stephanie Sullivan threw two complete game shutouts, giving up just four hits to earn her first-ever Pitcher of the Week honor.
Platt leads the Eagles in hits (48) and RBI (27), while topping the A-Sun with a .410 average, 36 runs scored and 14 doubles and is second in the league with a .709 slugging percentage. She is tied for fifth in the country in walks (41), 10th in walks per game (0.82) and 11th in on-base percentage (.575). Sophomore Mariah Fernández also adds some offensive punch, batting .246 with four doubles, three triples, two home runs and 21 RBI.
Series with FGCU: Series is tied 3-3.
About Stetson: The Hatters (16-23 overall, 2-8 A-Sun) were swept by USC Upstate last Saturday after splitting a game a piece against ETSU the night before. Stetson’s lineup features four players hitting .300 or higher, led by Chrissy Morello .349 average. In the circle, Stetson’s Meredith Owen (5-10, 2.34 ERA) and Camille Czarnecki (9-6, 2.95 ERA) have been the two weekend starters. The Hatters will host Belmont in double-header action on Thursday before playing host to the Lady Bisons at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.
