NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After taking three of four conference games over the weekend, Lipscomb softball gets a week off from the Atlantic Sun grind. The Lady Bisons host UAB for a make-up doubleheader, Tuesday, beginning at 5 p.m. Lipscomb will travel to Western Kentucky Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Lady Toppers, also scheduled for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
Lipscomb owns an impressive 22-8 non-conference mark this year. Junior Kelsey Cartwright is a primary reason for this, hitting .396 with 10 home runs. Senior Whitney Kiihnl is hitting .370 against non-conference opponents to go with her 18-4 record, 138 strike outs and 1.67 ERA.
Kiihnl picked up her 20th victory over the weekend. The Batesville, Miss. native has three consecutive 20-win seasons and remains the only Lady Bisons pitcher in the Division I era to win 20 games in one year.
Last Time Against This Week’s Opponents
Lipscomb last faced UAB in 2010 and took three of four meetings from the Blazers. On April 20, the Lady Bisons split a doubleheader at Draper Diamond, winning the opening pitcher’s duel 1-0 and losing the 7-5 slugfest in game two. At the NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa, the Lady Bisons defeated UAB twice (4-1 and 7-6) to advance to the Region final against top-ranked Alabama. The Lady Bisons swept a March home doubleheader last season, winning an extra-inning affair 3-2 in game one and earning a sloppy 9-5 rain-delayed game two. Kiihnl went the distance in the first game, striking out 12 for the win. Mollie Mitchell’s grand slam in game two provided much of the Lipscomb offense.

Lipscomb Takes Three of Four in Georgia
Needing wins to keep pace in the Atlantic Sun, Lipscomb took three of four from Kennesaw State and Mercer over the weekend. The Lady Bisons split with the Owls, with Kiihnl winning a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in the first game. The Kennesaw State bats came alive in the Owls 7-1 game two victory. Cartwright had a massive day against Mercer, homering in both games. Her game-one grand slam accounted for half the offense in an 8-2 win, while her two-run blast in the second game provided late insurance runs for the Lady Bisons.
Head coach Kristin Ryman is at 213 victories, leaving her nine away from Andy Lane’s school record 222 victories. Cartwright needs one more home run for 14, which would tie her with assistant coach Heather Collins and Abby Keese for second-most in a single season in Lipscomb history. Kiihnl needs two strike outs for 1,100 and four to hit the 200 mark in a single season for the fourth time in her career. Senior Mollie Mitchell needs to score three runs to pass Keese for third all-time in Lipscomb history.
