NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team has received national recognition for their play on the field this season but they are also being recognized for their work in the classroom as well.
Four Lady Bisons were named to the Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference Team – senior pitcher Ashley Anderson, senior right field-designated player Kelsey Cartwright, sophomore center fielder Brittany Elmore and junior left fielder Brianne Welch.
“We put such an emphasis on academics,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “I really think Lipscomb is a special place and one of the reasons is for academics.
“It is neat to see our players recognized not only for their academic talents and their GPAs, but also the fact their numbers on the field are being taken into account. These are four players who get it done in both areas. Truthfully, we had a couple of others that could have made it.”
A minimum grade point average of 3.3 was required. Players nominated also had to play in at least 50 percent of the team’s games.
The Lady Bisons had the most players honored on the 12-player team. The only other teams with multiple honorees were Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Anderson has a 3.49 grade point average with a major in exercise science. Cartwright has a 3.52 and has completed her Masters in special education. Elmore has a 3.93 in Interdisciplinary Teaching. Welch has a 3.88 in journalism and new media.
“We put an emphasis on softball obviously, but we try to put an emphasis on the academic side, the spiritual side and the social side,” Ryman said. “We want to try to help them enhance every aspect of their college experience.”
