Lady Bisons split matches in final day of Aces Tournament

Sept. 17, 2005 - The Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team opened the day Saturday with a 3-0 loss to host Evansville in the Dunn Hospitality Aces Invitational in Evansville, Ind. The Lady Bisons closed out the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Tennessee Tech.

Libero Ann Mullins was named to the All-Tournament Team.

"In all three of our matches it was a matter of doing things to ourselves," said Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal. "We were making too many hitting errors against Evansville and IUPUI. We didn't make those mistakes against Tennessee Tech. We beat them in every category except blocks."

The Lady Bisons posted 89 digs and 15 service aces in the match against Tennessee Tech. The Lady Bisons won the first game 30-27, lost the second 30-22 and then closed out the match with 30-20 and 30-24 wins.

Mullins set an all-time school record for digs with 43 in the Tennessee Tech match. The old record of 31 was held by Julie Holliday and Erin Schremp.Jessica Enderle added 12 and Lindsey Rutherford finished with 10.

Erin Pierce led with five service aces.

Cara Wilber posted a season-high and match-high 18 kills. Jessica Turner finished with 12.

Tennessee Tech dropped to 4-7 with the loss.

"Jessica Turner played in all four games, but most of those kills came in games three and four," Rosenthal said. "Samantha Sullivan had great play all around. Catherine Johnson's numbers don't jump out at you, but she played well as did Cara Wilber and Erin Pierce."

Evansville beat the Lady Bisons 30-23, 30-26 and 30-1 in the morning match. Evansville hit .276 as a team against the Lady Bisons who hit .120.

Mullins led the Lady Bisons with 14 digs and Enderle added nine.

"Our girls don't get rattled," Rosenthal said. "I love that about them. They jelled during this tournament."

The Lady Bisons, 3-8, travel across town to face Tennessee State Tuesday night at 7.
