With a chance for a share of first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference hanging in the balance, the Lipscomb Lady Bisons gave ETSU a strong match, but could not come up with the win.
Saturday afternoon in Johnson City ETSU won the three-game match by scores of 32-30, 30-28 and 30-24. ETSU has won a school record 11 straight games and has sole possession of first place in the A-Sun with a 7-0 record. The Lady Bisons are 5-2 in the conference.
"We did some good things in the first game," said Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal. "ETSU played great defense. And we played great defense. It was classic point-for-point battle. It came down to a couple of mistakes at the end for us.
"In game two we were down four or five points and we battled back. Kaley Mohr came into serve and did a great job of getting us back in the game. Again, we had our chances at the end and made a couple of mistakes. But we played hard. When we got behind we didn't give up and I liked that, but we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball at the end of close game."
The third game was similar to the second game with the Lady Bisons keeping it close until near the end.
Defensively, ETSU made 64 digs and the Lady Bisons made 69. Kaena Apana set a new A-Sun record for digs in a three-game match with 31.
Rutherford earned a double-double as she led the Lady Bisons with 13 kills.
Two ETSU players finished with double-doubles. Jennifer Sartor tied for the match-high with 15 kills and added 15 digs. Callie Kiselich also had 15 kills and 10 digs. Crystal Palmer chipped in with 10 kills.
The Lady Bisons, 10-14 overall, are back home Tuesday night to face Tennessee-Martin in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. at Allen Arena.
ETSU is 20-5 overall.
"It was a good match," said Rosenthal. "It was a lot like our match with Belmont. We had opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them.
"ETSU beat Belmont Friday and then they beat us. They had a great weekend. We will take this and learn from it."
