MACON, Ga. - Patience paid off for Lipscomb's Sarah Snider as the dynamic outside hitter earned Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors following a record setting performance.
The junior set A-Sun records for kills with 37 and total attempts with 109 in a five-game match, a 3-2 win at Tennessee-Chattanooga to start the week. The old record was 35 set twice by UCF's Leyre Santaella Sante against Stephen F. Austin Sept. 7, 2002 and a second time versus Belmont Sept. 28, 2001. Her 37 kills ties Cori Dayton of Charlotte for the most by an individual this season.
Snider added a match-high 14 kills Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of A-Sun foe Kennesaw State. Additionally, she added double figure digs in both matches as well. The Alabama transfer paced the Lady Bisons in kills for the 17th time this season and has finished in double figures in kills 20 times this year.
Snider, a native of Oswego, Ill., leads the conference in kills (5.14) and points (5.65) and looks to become just the third A-Sun player to average better than five kills per game since 2001.
The Lady Bisons have won a school record eight straight matches, climbing into a tie for third in the conference standings.
In addition to shattering the Atlantic Sun record for total attempts in a five-game mach with 109 Oct. 16 at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Snider is tied for fourth in the category nationally in NCAA Division I.
The all-time high is 119 set by Mindy Rice Nov. 29, 1994 in a match between Idaho and Montana. Also tied with 109 are Ann Pinkowski in a match between Portland and St. Mary's (Calif.), Oct. 14, 1989 and Tara Cross in a match between Long Beach State and Hawaii Oct. 3, 1986.
Senior libero Ann Mullins had a match-high 23 digs against Kennesaw State in a 3-0 match win Saturday, but is four short of the all-time A-Sun digs record of 1,843 set by Mercer's Liz Kane. Mullins should break the record Tuesday night at Belmont. What makes the feat even more remarkable is she has done it in only three seasons.
