Lipscomb’s Lady Bisons won their first match of the season, defeating Austin Peay State 3-1 Tuesday night at the Dunn Center in Clarksville.
The Lady Bisons also ended Austin Peay’s win streak at four matches. The Lady Bisons raised their record to 1-3.
Sophomore middle blocker Alex Kelly recorded 16 kills, her fourth match high of the season. She also added nine blocks and four service aces.
“Alex has done a great job of stepping up when we need her,” said Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal. “This match was a great example of what she is able to do offensively and defensively. She set the tone for us with her blocks.”
The Lady Bisons won the first set 25-23, lost set two 29-27 and then won set t here 25-12 and set four 25-22.
“The fourth set was not as close as the score might indicate,” Rosenthal said. “In the first and second sets we didn’t finish points. We would have a three-or-four-point lead but we couldn’t build on them.”
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Bradley recorded her first double-double of the season and the second for the team with 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Amy Trykowski added 11 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
“Katie had a slow start,” Rosenthal said. “After set two we had a good talk. I told her just to relax and to go out and play.
“She is making the move from the right side to outside hitter. She has to fill a bigger role.”
Defensively, senior libero Sarah Snider made 19 digs. Senior defensive specialist Jessica Turner added 12. Junior opposite Erin Pierce chipped in with 11.
“Sarah did an awesome job,” Rosenthal said. “She would rather play on the front row, but she has been a big help in the back.
“Jess Turner did a great job on the back row with both her passing and her defense. As a team we did a better job of distributing the ball.”
The Lady Bisons head to Murfreesboro Friday to face Middle Tennessee, ranked No. 15 in the AVCA poll, and Loyola Marymount. They will play Florida International on Saturday.
