Junior Caitlin Dotson set a career-high with 44 assists.
"She’s (Dotson) our setter and she’s got to go and do her job and I thought she did a great job running our offense today,” head coach Brandon Rosenthal said.
Sophomore Lauren Ford also had a career match as she had a career-high 14 digs.
“I thought Lauren Ford was tremendous today,” Rosenthal said. “The attitude and the energy that she played with, she was not afraid. That’s what we need out of her.
After losing the first set, the Lady Bisons (0-2) won the next two sets to lead the match, 2-1. But LU couldn’t put Kentucky (2-0) away as the Wildcats won the last two sets to win the match.
In the first set, the Lady Bisons jumped out on top 2-1 before Kentucky outscored LU to make it 17-9. But the Lady Bisons were not done as they closed the gap to within four, 19-15, before the Wildcats finished out the set to win 25-20.
In the second set, the Lady Bisons got off to a better start, leading the No. 13 team in the country 8-4. Kentucky made a little run to close it within one point, 10-9, but the Lipscomb team pulled out to a 13-9 lead as Kentucky called timeout.
The Lady Bisons continued to stretch their lead to 17-11 before another Wildcat timeout. But Kentucky was not finished and outscored Lipscomb to close the gap to 18-14 as LU called timeout. UK would not go away as they came back to tie it at 22 apiece. Throughout the rest of the match, it went back-and-forth, but Kentucky never led during the second set as the volleyball team won their first set of the season 25-23.
Like the first two sets, the Lady Bisons started off strong and won the first two points of the set and led 6-1, but Kentucky battled back to close within one, 8-7. The set went back-and-forth as UK took their first lead at 13-12 since winning the first set and at 14-13, but then Lipscomb took the next three points to lead 16-14 as Kentucky called timeout and the Wildcats never saw a lead during the third set again.
The Lady Bisons padded their lead to 20-16 as Kentucky called their last timeout in the third set. The Wildcats scored two consecutive points as Lipscomb called timeout, but the Lady Bisons took control and won the second set 25-21 to lead the Wildcats 2-1.
In the last two sets, Kentucky started to find their groove. For the first time, Kentucky started out with the lead in the last two sets and won the fourth set 25-13 and the fifth set 15-10.
“I can’t say enough what our girls did today in a tough environment,” Rosenthal said. “It’s hot in there. I’m proud of the way our girls responded.”
However, Lipscomb is not finished for the day as they finish up the Kentucky Classic against North Carolina at 5 p.m.
“Like Long Beach and Kentucky, North Carolina is a tough team," Rosenthal said. "They’re very physical at the net and we’re going to have to play our style."
