Ford earns All-Tournament as Volleyball comes up short against UNC

Saturday, August 25, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky.-The Lipscomb volleyball team came up empty in the Kentucky Classic dropping the final match of the tournament 3-0 to North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum but gained valuable experience against top-tier competition.

UNC (2-1) took control in the first set and won 25-11, but in the second set, the Lady Bisons (0-3) played well after falling behind early.   LU was down a point 8-7, but then the Tar Heels scored six straight points.  Lipscomb kept pace with UNC, but could not chip away at the lead and fell 25-17.

In the third set, North Carolina scored the first eight points, but the Lady Bisons did not quit as they outscored UNC 13-6 to pull within one point.  But Carolina held on to win the set and match, 25-18.

“It’s a little disappointing that we weren’t able to sustain our effort and our energy,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said.  “This team could have rolled over, but I was proud that they didn’t and they fought to the very end.”

Junior Caitlin Dotson led the team with 25 assists and nine digs, while senior Kaycee Green led the team with seven kills and junior Stephanie Rex led the team with 11 digs.

“Caitlin Dotson did some really nice things in stretches,” Rosenthal said.  “She’s our quarterback and she’s our leader.”

Lipscomb sophomore Lauren Ford earned Kentucky Classic All-Tournament Team honors after averaging nearly a double-double throughout the tourney. In three matches, Ford notched 32 kills and added 28 digs, including a career high 14 against No. 13 Kentucky earlier in the day.

The Lady Bisons return home after the tournament for the Lipscomb Invitational starting with a double header on Friday, Aug. 31st with Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m. and Missouri at 7:30 p.m. at Allen Arena.  The tournament concludes on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as the Lady Bisons take on Houston.

“It will be nice to be at home and play in front of our home crowd,” Rosenthal said.

Admission is $5 for each session for those ages 13 and up.  Admission is free for all Lipscomb students with their student ID and those ages 12 and under.
