NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team starts a five-match home stand, the longest of the season, against Atlantic Sun Conference opponents ETSU Friday night at 6:30 and USC Upstate Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Bisons defeated ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., on Oct. 6, 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-16) after losing the first set. LU holds a 10-4 record and is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.
“What I thought we did well the first time with ETSU was controlling our side of our court,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “I thought we did a nice job on defense. But, more importantly, we moved the ball around a lot and that frustrated them to a certain extent.”
The Bucs are led by Megan Devine with 380 kills and 324 digs and Jamie Rutledge with 549 assists.
The Lady Bisons also defeated USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., on Oct. 5 in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) sweep. LU holds a perfect 9-0 record against the Spartans.
Rosenthal thinks Upstate is playing its best volleyball in the two seasons in the conference.
“It’s really important to establish our game plan and establish our style of play early,” Rosenthal said. “The more and more we allow that team to get into a rhythm, or to feel comfortable, that could be a dangerous setting.”
Kayla McAvoy with 268 kills and Emily Sanders with 475 assists and 356 digs lead the Spartans.
Libero Stephanie Rex is closing in on her 1,000th career dig. Rex only needs 41 more digs to reach the milestone.
“It is special,” Rosenthal said. “It’s something that she’s worked hard for, and it’s something that even though she’s played a lot of matches, she is always trying to get better.”
The junior is coming off her best weekend this season. The Brownsburg, Ind., native had 23 digs at North Florida last Friday night and followed up with a 24-dig performance at Jacksonville on Saturday, which tied her career-high.
“Rex really played some inspired volleyball,” Rosenthal said. “It was neat to see her put up some pretty good matches, like she did this past weekend.”
Rex will be the fifth Lady Bison to have at least 1,000 career digs in Lipscomb volleyball history.
Rex ranks seventh in the A-Sun with 4.11 digs per set and ranks third in A-Sun matches with 4.59 digs per set.
The Lady Bisons have posted two consecutive 1-1 weekend. North Florida defeated LU 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-21, 25-14) in Jacksonville, Fla., to snap LU’s eight-match winning streak over the Ospreys.
LU bounced back on the road against Jacksonville in a 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 25-21) win to continue its winning streak of 11 over the Dolphins.
Middle blocker Jewell Dobson had a career-high 22 kills at Jacksonville. The sophomore had a .677 hitting percentage (22-1-31) against the Dolphins, the third highest hitting percentage in school history for a player who had at least 12 kills.
The Lady Bisons continue their five-match home stand with a mid-week match against Northern Kentucky on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
LU defeated Northern Kentucky on Sept. 18 in a 3-2 (16-25, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13) win in Highland Heights, Ky., to start the A-Sun portion of the season.
