KENNESAW, Ga. – History is full of famous trios. The Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team appears to be ready to add another one to the list.
Right side Brittnay Estes, middle blocker Molly Spitznagle and outside hitter Lauren Ford combined for 7.5 blocks Friday night in a 3-0 sweep of Kennesaw State. The Lady Bisons won by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-21.
“They really came on and did a great job,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “We had so many blocks in the second set.
“Brittnay not only blocked a lot of balls but she put away some balls at key points. At the end of the match she put away a really nice ball. You can see the confidence continue to grow with her.”
Spitznagle was the leader with four. Estes made 2.5. Ford added two.
“The blocks were a huge part of our win,” Rosenthal said. “I thought we did a nice job.
“It was one of those things where we got into a rhythm and came out with some big blocks at key points. But I think we will always be known as a defensive, digging team.”
It was not the usual approach to a match for the Lady Bisons.
“It was a different stat sheet for us,” Rosenthal said. “We didn’t win the attack game. I thought Kennesaw State did a nice job on defense. People get up to play us. That extra little bit defensively created some pressure on us.
“A couple of times we gave information that wasn’t carried all the way out. That happens. It wasn’t a bad thing but we have to be able to take that information and put it to use.”
The Lady Bisons, who have won 10 of their last 11 matches, have qualified for the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the ninth straight season with the victory.
The Lady Bisons, 17-6 overall, 11-2 in the A-Sun, head down the road to Macon Saturday to face Mercer, 1-23, 0-14 in the A-Sun, at 2 p.m. Mercer lost 3-2 to Northern Kentucky Friday night.
The Lady Bisons swept Mercer 3-0 on Oct. 11.
The win over Kennesaw State, 10-14, 5-9 in the conference, was the eighth consecutive victory for the Lady Bisons. It is the longest active win streak in the A-Sun.
It was the seventh sweep of a conference match by the Lady Bisons. Twelve of their 17 wins have been sweeps this season.
Rosenthal thought the game atmosphere provided a challenge for his players to retain their focus.
“Our in-game adjustments probably lacked a little bit,” Rosenthal said. “But in the end I thought our girls did a great job of finding a way to win, especially in the second set.
“The crowd was good. They had their band there. It was loud. There was definitely a lot going on. They did a nice job of creating a game atmosphere. There is a lot to look at there. To stay focused there is a little tough.”
On Oct. 12 the Lady Bisons beat Kennesaw State 3-1. The Lady Bisons are 13-0 in the series.
Middle blocker Jewell Dobson led the Lady Bisons with 16 kills and a match high .542 hitting percentage.
Spitznagle finished with eight kills and a .538 hitting percentage. Rosenthal thought Spitznagle should have had more kill opportunities.
“Molly was one player I thought we should have set more,” Rosenthal said. “For some reason we didn’t.”
Setter Caitlin “Dot” Dotson paced the Purple and Gold with nine digs.
Kelly Marcinek made a match-high 19 kills with a .406 hitting percentage for Kennesaw State.
Mercer is next
The Lady Bisons will be facing Mercer on senior night. Mercer also has a challenging game atmosphere. Rosenthal expects his players to find a way to overcome any match atmosphere issues.
“It is a tough environment,” Rosenthal said. “We have a lot of great players. It is hard to stop the myriad of players that we have.
“We have to remember that we have to put the pressure on them. Whatever they have, I think we’ve got better. We have to play with that confidence.”
Soccer team gives a lift
The Lady Bisons soccer team was a vocal part of the crowd Friday night. The Lady Bisons play Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
