Ann Mullins has transferred to Lipscomb University's volleyball program after spending two seasons at the University of Tennessee.
Mullins, a defensive specialist/libero, is a Nashville resident. She lettered three years in volleyball at Father Ryan High School, serving two seasons as team captain. She also lettered twice in basketball.
"What I like about Ann is she is a tremendous defensive player," said Lipscomb volleyball coach Brandon Rosenthal. "She understands the game. She sees the game. She has played the game at a high level."
Mullins played for the IMPACT Club team, finishing second place at nationals as a 17-and-18-year-old.
"She has played against pretty tough competition in club volleyball and she has obviously played at the Southeastern Conference level," Rosenthal said.
She was named Most Improved on the Lady Vols as a freshman. As a freshman she played in 24 matches (72 games), recording 112 digs and 14 service aces. As a sophomore. She played in seven matches (12 games) averaging 1.16 digs per game.
"I like her tenacity and her spirit on the court," Rosenthal said. "She is going to give you those extra points just because of her attitude and how much she wants it. She is going to be a vocal leader. To be honest with you, that is something we have lacked the last couple of years _ someone who is going to step up and gather everybody together and get them going."
Rosenthal thinks that Mullins can add a new dimension to the team in terms of confidence.
"It is not going to be a case where we are happy to win games," Rosenthal said. "We are going to expect to win."
Mullins was familiar with the program at Lipscomb. She did a great deal of homework before deciding to make the move.
"We are building our program," Rosenthal said. "She has played at a high level, and she can have a major role in the program. She can come in and be a leader and fight for a lot of playing time. To get someone of Ann's caliber is great."
Ann is the daughter of Sarah and Steve Mullins.
