Monday, November 24, 2008The Lipscomb Lady Bisons made a strong second half run, but they couldn’t sustain the momentum in a 62-48 loss Monday night to visiting Samford at Allen Arena.
Samford jumped out to a quick lead on a 3-pointer by guard Emily London.
With 11:37 left in the first half the Lady Bisons held on to an 8-5 lead as the result of a 3-pointer by forward Miriam McAlister. But at 11:08 Samford’s Paige Anderson scored her only field goal of the game, a lay-up that started a 10-0 run. The Lady Bisons pulled within five points, but Samford opened up the lead. They were up by 12 two different occasions in the half.
The Lady Bisons closed the gap to nine points at intermission on pair of free throws by forward Cree Nix.
In the second half the Lady Bisons started to chip away at Samford’s advantage. They came back to tie the game at 34-34 on a pair of free throws by guard Toia McGowan. They would tie the game again at 36-36 on two free throws from forward Jilian Partin with 10:07 left to play.
But once again Samford put together a 9-0 run to take a 45-36 lead with 8:12 left to play.
With 6:23 on the clock Samford scored on a 3-pointer by Karman Smith for a 48-38 lead. The Lady Bisons made on last push, cutting the lead to nine at 50-41 when Nix made hit two free throws with 3:29 remaining. But Samford answered once again and stayed in control the rest of the way.
Bartsokas scored 15 points, tying for the game high. Nix added 14 points, a season-high. She also hauled in nine rebounds, also tying for the game. Bartsokas has scored in double figures in every game this season. Nix led the team in rebounds for the second game in a row. She also had nine rebounds Saturday at Bowling Green State.
Samford placed three players in double figures. Forward Savannah Hill led with 15 points followed by Chika Okoli with 14 and Smith with 11.
The Lady Bisons held a 44-35 advantage on the boards.
The loss dropped Lipscomb to 1-4. Samford remains unbeaten at 4-0.
