NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team begins the Atlantic Sun schedule by hosting Mercer, Thursday at 5 p.m. in Allen Arena.

Lipscomb has been mired in a slump to open the season, starting out 0-7 with losses to Liberty and Vanderbilt at last week’s Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament. The Lady Bisons have a great chance to pick up their first victory of the season against a Mercer team that went 2-27 during the 2010-11 campaign.

“They’re a young team, but they have some talent,” said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett. “They have size and a good young player in (sophomore Briana) Williams.”

Senior Anna Bowers continues to lead the Lady Bisons in scoring with 11.3 points per game; junior Hannah Phillips is just behind her with a 9.4 average and leads Lipscomb in rebounding at 5.4 per game.

The Lady Bisons are home for the first time since Nov. 14 after an unkind road trip. Lipscomb lost five consecutive road games by an average margin of 27.6 points per game.

“It’s a big boost if you can get a couple of conference wins right off the bat,” Bennett said. “The biggest thing for us is we need to get a win.”

The Opponent: Mercer struggled last season under first-year head coach Susie Gardner and are off to a 1-5 start this season. Sophomore Briana Williams, last season’s A-Sun Freshman of the Year, is averaging 14.2 points per game and poured in a career-high 33 points against High Point to earn A-Sun Player of the Week honors for last week. Mercer forward Alex Phillips is third in the A-Sun in rebounds, hauling in 8.3 boards a game.

Tickets: Tickets for Thursday night’s game are on sale at the Lipscomb ticket office at Allen Arena or online at http://www.LipscombTickets.com

Online: This game will be streamed online by ASunTV, and you can follow the live stats here. Be sure to follow Lipscomb Sports on Twitter (@LipscombBisons) and like the women’s basketball team on Facebook (Lipscomb Women’s Basketball).

Up Next: The Lady Bisons will be home for a 2:15 tip, Saturday, against Kennesaw State in their final Atlantic Sun contest before Christmas. Lipscomb will then hit the road for match-ups at Tennessee Tech and No. 14 North Carolina.
