SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a heartbreaking defeat at ETSU to open Atlantic Sun play, the Lipscomb Lady Bisons look to bounce back with a big road win at USC Upstate on Saturday. The A-Sun matchup is set to tip at 1 p.m. CST in the G.B. Hodge Center.
The Lady Bisons record dipped to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the A-Sun with the loss.
Lipscomb is 3-9 all-time against the Lady Spartans. The two teams split last year’s series 1-1, with Upstate winning at home 78-62. The Lady Bisons took the victory in Nashville 57-56.
Danay Fothergill and Ashley Southern had monster games for the Purple and Gold Thursday night in snowy Johnson City, combining for 51 points, 26 rebounds (11 offensive) and six steals.
Fothergill had a career night with a school NCAA record 31 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Fothergill was also credited with four steals. Her 31-point effort is the best single game performance in the A-Sun this season. Fothergill upped her scoring average to a team-leading 18.7 points.
Southern was back to her normal self, pouring in 20 points and a game-high 16 boards. It was Southern’s ninth double-double of the season, putting her inside the top 10 nationally in that category.
Southern is fourth in the conference in scoring at 15.8 and leads the A-Sun with 12.1 rebounds per game.
Sara Bliss leads the Lady Bisons with 27 made 3-pointers and an 87.2 free throw percentage, sinking 34-of-39 on the year. Maya Dillard is tops on the team and fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.3 a game. Her 1.6 steals per game places Dillard sixth in the A-Sun.
“It is going to be a lot of the same things at Upstate as there was Thursday,” Brown said. “We have to control the transition and penetration of the ball and block out. The key in this league is you have to limit your opponents to one shot and take away as many easy baskets as you can.”
Lipscomb may have success in the paint on Saturday as Upstate rosters only two six-footers; Shelby Hicks and Brittany Starling.
The two teams are evenly matched on the boards, standing 5th and 6th in the conference. Lipscomb pulls down 39.2 misses per game while Upstate grabs 38.8.
Southern leads the A-Sun and ranks 11th nationally, averaging 12.1 rebounds a game. Jess Reece had success on the boards against the Spartans last year at home, snagging 17 rebounds in the 57-56 Lipscomb win.
If Lipscomb can get a win in Spartanburg on Saturday, it will carry momentum into the Lady Bisons first home contest in over a month on Jan. 9 when Kennesaw State visits Allen Arena.
USC Upstate is coming off of a 76-60 home loss to Northern Kentucky to open A-Sun play. The loss dropped the Lady Spartans to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Upstate was paced with Starling’s 15-point effort on 7-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Brittany Clency added 14 points.
Starling is the only double-digit scorer for the Lady Spartans on the year, pouring in 11.3 per game. She also leads the team in rebounding at 7.4 a game in 22.4 minutes of play. Starling is shooting 51.5 percent from the floor, making 51 of her 101 shots on the season.
The Lady Spartans are eighth in the A-Sun in scoring offense, averaging 62.2 points per game. Lipscomb is third at 67.7 per contest.
