Center Penny Jones scored a game-high and career-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 21 minutes, but the Lady Bisons fell short of victory as Stetson won 63-61 in Atlantic Sun competition Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.

"Stetson is a very physical and quick team," said Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett. "It is hard for us to simulate that in practice because we aren't that quick."

Katie Beth Pate pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked three shots for the Lady Bisons, who were out-rebounded 43-42.

The Lady Bisons trailed 31-28 at the half. The biggest lead for the Lady Bisons in the first half was eight points (17-9) with 12:18 left on a lay-up by Kaleigh Gossman.

Stetson, sparked by Nefertiti Walker who finished with 20 points, chipped away at the Lady Bisons first half lead. There were eight lead changes in the half.

One of the keys were seven blocked shots by Stetson.

"We have to do a better job of finishing around the basket," Bennett said. "They got a lot of blocks. We have to finish our plays inside even somebody is hitting us. In the second half we made some adjustments in the physical part of the game."

In the second half, Stetson scored the first five points to open up their own eight-point lead (36-28) at18:23 on a 3-pointer by Walker. The Lady Bisons would rally on a series of lay-ups by Jones and Gossman to cut the Stetson lead to 37-36 with 14:53 remaining.

A lay-up by Julie Martin at14:04 gave the Lady Bisons a lead. Stetson would twice tie the Lady Bisons before taking a 49-47 lead at 7:53 on a field goal by Walker.

A 3-pointer from the top of the arc by Jones put Lipscomb back up 52-51 at5:33. Setson responded with a 3-pointer by JoAnn Smith, her only field goal of the game, to take a 54-52 lead at5:10. Stetson never trailed the rest of the way.

Lynn Roller's 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Lady Bisons closed out the game.

Janene Maclin finished with 15 for Stetson. Kristy Brown, one of the top players in the A-Sun. scored only five points and grabbed only five rebounds.

"If you have told me we would hold Kristy Brown to five points and five rebounds I would have said we were going to win," Bennett said.

The loss ended a 12-game home court winning streak for the Lady Bisons. It was only their second loss in the A-Sun. The Lady Bisons 10-5 overall, 7-3 in the conference. Stetson is 7-7 overall, 4-3 in the A-Sun..
