Thursday, February 05, 2009The Lady Bisons missed a chance for a series sweep.
Thursday night they fell 70-56 at Campbell in an Atlantic Sun game at the John W. Pope, Jr., Convocation Center in Buies Creek, N.C. On Jan. 8 they beat Campbell 69-45, the largest margin of victory this season.
The Lady Bisons were sparked by a season-high 17 points from freshman point guard Anna Bowers. She hit six-of-12 field goals, including a five-of-nine performance from the 3-point line.
Bowers set new season highs for field goals made and for 3-point field goals made. She also tied her season-high for 3-point field goal attempts.
The Lady Bisons spotted Campbell a 7-0 lead, but fought to cut the gap though they never never take the lead.
Sophomore forward Cree Nix scored on a lay-up with 17:20 on the clock for the first points for the Lady Bisons. With 14:22 left in first half Campbell lead 15-4.
A 3-point shot by sophomore forward Valerie Bronson, her first of the season, cut the Campbell lead to 17-12 at 13:21. Freshman forward Brittany Duerk cut the Campbell advantage to two points with a lay-up at 12:36.
With 9:28 left in the first Bowers hit a 3-pointer to trim the Campbell lead to 21-19. With 6:40 left Duerk scored on a lay-up to keep the Lady Bisons close at 23-21.
Campbell, however, pulled ahead in the final minutes to lead 34-28 at intermission.
In the second half the Lady Bisopns pulled within four, 46-42, on a free throw by senior forward Jilian Partin at 10:51.
Nix scored on a jumper with 8:46 remaining in the game to keep the Lady Bisons within four points, 49-45. That was as close as the Lady Bisons would get to Campbell the rest of the way.
Nix and freshman center Clair Waggener each added 11 points for the Lady Bisons.
The Lady Bisons were 19-of-47 from the field, 40.4 percent.
Nix and Waggener led the Lady Bisons in rebounds with five each.
Campbell forward Geami Britt scored a game-high 24 points. Lauren Yesh added 10.
Campbell hit 25-of-54 from the field for 46.3 percent.
Yesh and Ashley Williams had six rebounds apiece for Campbell.
The Lady Bisons, 4-18, 2-11 in the A-Sun, are back in action Tuesday night against Belmont in the women's “Battle of the Boulevard”. Tne Lady Bisons beat Belmont 76-66 at the Curb Center Jan. 12. The Lady Bisons have won the last three meetings between tne two rivals.
Campbell is 10-12, 3-10 in the conference.
