Wednesday, October 28, 2009The Lady Bisons basketball team spent some time this week with Atlantic Sun officials to determine how games will be called during the 2009-2010 season.
“We had A-Sun officials talk to the team and demonstrate the points of emphasis as to what they will be looking for this season,” said Lady Bisons coach Frank Bennett. “They will be calling hand checks a lot. They will be watching traveling very closely, especially in the post. They also talked about things we can do and can’t do in post defense.”
In addition the officials also called an intra-squad game for the Lady Bisons. Bennett is facing some tough decisions in terms of how he is going to parcel out playing time due to the increased depth on the team this season.
“We’re just going to have to wait and see,” said Bennett. “Each of the 12 players played pretty well. They are making it tough on me.”
He did see several things in the intra-squad scrimmage that he liked.
“The team was playing up tempo and aggressive and making plays,” said Bennett. “We had over 25 assists in five eight-minute periods which is the equivalent to a 40-minute game.
“We had players driving the ball to the basket. We had players doing a good job of feeding our post players.”
Individual standouts included sophomore wing player Chelsea Burroughs and junior point guard Jenna Bartsokas.
“Chelsea was very aggressive offensively in taking the ball to the basket and shooting the ball,” said Bennett. “She also got some steals defensively.
“Jenna is doing a great job of running our team and trying to catch on to opportunities to be aggressive offensively and create shots and drives.”
Bennett also thought that sophomore post player Brittany Duerk played at a much more aggressive pace on offense.
“She didn’t knock all of her shots down, but she also getting some second shots,” said Bennett.
Freshman post player Chelsea McMeans grabbed 10 rebounds.
“I could go down the roster and run off the good things that players did,” said Bennett. “It is very encouraging.”
This week the emphasis for the Lady Bisons has been on defense.
“We are kind of inconsistent on defense,” said Bennett. “We’ve got some good plays and we have some things that are out of position.”
