Wednesday, January 12, 2011The Lipscomb Lady Bisons preparation for their first “Battle of the Boulevard” meeting with Belmont this season has been a little different than in past seasons.
After playing five games in 10 days, including a 57-53 loss to North Florida Monday, the Lady Bisons took a day off Tuesday. They practiced Wednesday, but head coach Frank Bennett was under the weather.
The two rivals will tip-off at 4:30 at the Curb Center Thursday. The Lady Bisons are 7-8, 4-2 in the Atlantic Sun. Belmont is 6-9, 3-3 in the conference.
“Belmont has a good inside-out game,” assistant coach Billy Snell said as he filled in for Bennett during the Lipscomb Fastbreak luncheon. “Haley Nelson is their leading scorer on the inside. They also have good guards that can shoot.
“It is a good balance. You have to help on defense. You have to be in two places at one time or they are going to burn you if you aren’t there. They run a lot of sets and have a lot of movement. We have to communicate and be where we are supposed to be.”
The Lady Bisons are led by guards Jenna Bartsokas with 15.5 points per game and Anna Bowers with 14.1. Center Brittany Duerk is leading in rebounds with 5.3 per game.
“We have experienced some success at Belmont and that means a lot,” Snell said. “Knowing that you have experienced success is a big thing.”
The coaching staff didn’t need to spend a great deal of time on the Belmont scouting report. Both teams are familiar with each other.
“Our players know all the Belmont players’ names and Belmont’s players know our names,” Snell said. “The kids know numbers and the strengths and weaknesses of Belmont’s players. It is a fun game to play.”
