Sunday, February 13, 2011It’s Valentine’s Day and the Lipscomb Lady Bisons would love nothing more than to win an Atlantic Sun basketball game.
Monday night they will be on the road at Campbell’s Pope Center for a 6 p.m. game. Both teams are battling for seedings in the A-Sun Tournament.
The Lady Bisons have lost their last four games. They are 8-16 overall, 5-10 in the A-Sun. Campbell has lost four of its last six games. The Camels are 10-13, 9-6 in the conference.
Campbell is a challenging opponent. The Lady Bisons have lost their last four meetings with the Camels, including an 81-66 setback Jan. 17 at Allen Arena.
Campbell holds an 8-7 edge overall in the series. The Camels are 5-2 against the Lady Bisons in games at Buies Creek.
“Our game with Campbell was 68-61 at one point,” Lipscomb coach Frank Bennett said. “We are going to have to do a better job defensively.
“They only have one player averaging in double figures, but they have a lot of players who can score. You can’t concentrate on just one.”
The Lady Bisons have not played a game since a Feb. 5 loss to Jacksonville, a 74-59 decision. The timing of the break is unusual but Bennett thinks it has been beneficial for his team.
“We have had some players like Jess Reece and Brittany Duerk who needed some time to recover from treatments,” Bennett said. “We had a chance to give our players a couple of days off and we have had some really good practices against our men’s practice team.”
Guard Jenna Bartsokas is the top scorer for the Lady Bisons with 15.3 points per game average. Guard Anna Bowers is scoring 13.4 points per game.
Tonisha Baker paces Campbell with 11.4 points per game. Jazmine Cooper is averaging 9.3. Both Baker and Cooper are tied for the rebounding lead with 5.9 boards per game.
Cooper has scored 16 points in each of her last two games.
Forward Hannah Phillips has scored in double fi gures in her last two games with 12 at Jacksonville and 10 at North Florida for the Lady Bisons. She has scored in double figures eight times this season including six Atlantic Sun games.
