NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team has its toughest challenge of the season waiting on Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. non-conference tilt against No. 17 North Carolina at Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Lady Bisons (2-8, 1-1 A-Sun) are fresh off a 66-61 road win over Tennessee Tech on Monday night that saw junior wing Hannah Phillips score a career-high 20 points including 17 in the second half.
“It was a great win for us,” said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett. “We hadn’t beat Tennessee Tech before and to win at their place is a tough thing to do. We were fortunate to stay in it in the first half down 11 but easily could have been down 20-25.
“In the second half, they really regrouped and really came together and had our best basketball of the whole season on both ends of the floor. “
The opponent: North Carolina heads into Wednesday night’s contest 5-1 on the season and ranked in the top-20 in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
UNC is led by 6’5” senior center Chay Shegog, who is averaging 14.3 points per outing. Senior forward Laura Broomfield ranks just behind Shegog with a 14.0 scoring average and leads the club in rebounding hauling in 12.8 boards per contest.
“UNC is going to be a great challenge,” said Bennett. “They’re a top-20 team and lost to Penn State most recently, so they’ll be a little upset about that. They’re a very athletic, very long team.
“We’re going to go over there and take the game to them and play aggressively. We look forward to the challenge of playing them.”
The Lady Bisons have made the trip to Chapel Hill only one time in school history with Lipscomb dropping a 91-45 contest during the 2004-05 campaign.
Up next: Having played four games in six days, the Lady Bisons get a bit of a break in the action taking eight days off before Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi comes to Allen Arena on Dec. 16.
