NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Forcing a season-high 21 turnovers and hauling in a season-best 48 rebounds, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team topped Atlantic Sun foe Jacksonville 68-64 on Thursday night at Nashville’s Allen Arena.
The Lady Bison got a season-high 16 points from junior guard Morgan Faulkner who was 6-of-9 from the field including 4-of-6 from beyond the arch. Faulkner was joined in double figures by senior guard Anna Bowers with 13 and senior wing Leah McAlister and sophomore guard Haley Nelson, who each had a dozen each marking a career high for Nelson.
“Before the game I told Jada (Mincy), ‘They may fool me but this is the best warm up we’ve had in a long time,’” said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett. “’They’re really focused. They’re sharp shooting the ball. They’re talking’ I really felt like they were ready to play.
“The defense and the rebounding were really outstanding. We made plays when we had to offensively.”
Forcing 13 Dolphin turnovers in the opening frame, the Lady Bison lead nearly the entire stanza as Lipscomb put on a clinic on the boards behind nine from freshman post Sasha Robinson. Bowers also gave the Lady Bison a lift with a 10-point first half as Lipscomb led 29-28 at the break.
The game remained close in the second half with the Dolphins hanging tight but a three-pointer by senior wing Leah McAlister with 2:23 to play pushed the Lady Bison out to a 62-55 advantage and Bowers hit a free throw to make it an eight-point lead.
“I think the focus and the ball movement was really good,” said Bennett. “We’ve done some extra shooting at practice. Getting back home after 5-of-7 on the road helps a little bit but the ball movement was so good we got some really good shots.”
Offensive rebounds proved to be key in the game for Lipscomb as the Lady Bison hauled in 18 including a pair by senior post Brittany Duerk on back-to-back possessions that were both put back up for second-half baskets. Lipscomb won the battle on the glass 48-35 behind Robinson’s game-high 12 and another nine from McAlister.
“Sasha is really a great rebounder when she puts her mind to it and Jacksonville is one of the best rebounding teams in the conference,” said Bennett. “So against them, it means even more. Leah’s kind of amazing at 5’9” or maybe 5’10” battling the boards against post players with just effort and position.”
The Lady Bison continue home action on Saturday at 4 p.m. hosting A-Sun foe North Florida at Allen Arena. The contest is part of a doubleheader with the men’s team that features “Star Wars” night with a chance to dress as your favorite movie character and mingle with other fans of the classic films.
