NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s basketball team is 18 days into their fall practice schedule and head coach Greg Brown is seeing the benefits.
“In the last week we have started to see strides,” Brown said. “We started to see improvement defensively and tried to get caught up a little bit more. Offensively we are starting to see them screen a little bit better, see angles, get better reads and our communication is getting better. All-in-all we starting to see the improvement we wanted.”
As the Lady Bisons and the rest of the Atlantic Sun Conference work towards the start of the season, the league released the preseason polls with Stetson chosen as the coaches favorite garnering eight first-place votes. Florida Gulf Coast was second picking up the other two first-place votes. Lipscomb was predicted to finish ninth in the league.
Victoria McGowan of Stetson was tabbed the Preseason Player of the Year while Brittany Kennedy of Florida Gulf Coast earned the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Brown has seen several players step up over the first two weeks of practice noting senior Hannah Phillips and junior O’Neisha Smith.
“Hannah with her experience plays so hard,” Brown said. “As a senior and with her leadership she brings a ton of intangibles. If we took a poll of the most improved, O’Neisha Smith would be that right now. She has started to get a little confidence.
“Each day in practice we are starting to see different players step up. Every day is a little bit better than the one before.”
The Lady Bisons have two more weeks until their exhibition opener when they host Freed-Hardeman on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Allen Arena at 5 p.m.
“I continue what to see the intensity and concentration get higher,” Brown said. “With playing Freed on the first gives us a chance to evaluate ourselves against someone else instead of against ourselves.”
