NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In its last tune up before the regular season, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team prevailed 83-66 over Fisk in exhibition play in Allen Arena.
Four Lady Bisons scored in double-figures led by sophomore Ashley Southern with 17 points. Posting her second-straight double-double, Southern snagged 14 rebounds. Freshman Faith LeGate also notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
After a slow start by the Lady Bisons the game was tied at 15-all with 9:32 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bisons kicked into gear going on an 11-2 run to end to build a 28-17 lead with 6:45 remaining. The run began with a jumper from freshman Maya Dillard and ended with a 3-point basket by sophomore Alex Banks.
The Purple and Gold entered the intermission break with a 37-24 lead.
Lipscomb continued to put the pressure on in the second half, starting the period on a 12-3 run over the first 6:09.
A pair of treys from Kelli Smith and Sara Bliss started the run after Lipscomb hit just three long-range shots in the first half.
Banks hit her third 3-point basket of the game with 11:56 remaining to give Lipscomb its biggest lead of the game of 24 points at 57-33.
The Lady Bulldogs gave the Lady Bisons fits using six long range shots from Stevonna Scott who ended with a game-high 35 points.
“The good thing with exhibition games is it gives you an opportunity on tape to come back and really get their attention on stuff,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “The best thing I saw from it was awareness after the game where we didn’t execute well.
“The first step to improvement is awareness.”
Joining Southern and Legate in double digits were Banks with 16 points and Bliss with 13.
The Lady Bisons outrebounded Fisk 54-33 while outshooting the Lady Bulldogs 41.9 percent (31-74) to 33.9 percent (20-59).
Lipscomb begins regular season play Sunday hosting Morehead State. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. in Allen Arena.
“We worked hard,” Brown said. “They played hard but now we’ve got to step up the carryover from practice to a game. They are excited and we are in a good place for Sunday.”
