ATHENS, Ga. – Playing the second SEC opponent of the year, and second nationally-ranked team, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team travels to Athens, Ga. for a 6 p.m. tilt at Georgia on Tuesday.
The Lady Bisons (2-5) are looking for a third-consecutive road win, and second-straight win overall after defeating Jacksonville State 86-76 on Saturday night behind Chandler Cooper’s career-high 27 points.
Cooper’s career performance earned her the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week by the league and College Sports Madness. It was the most points by a Lady Bison since Anna Bowers dropped 27 in Nov. 2010 against Alabama A&M.
Western Kentucky transfer Danay Fothergill scored 19 points in her Lipscomb debut on Saturday. Fothergill and Cooper combined for 10 of the team’s 13 treys.
Cooper, a Clarksville, Tenn. native, upped her scoring average to 16.2 per game.
Ashley Southern scored 14 points and snagged 13 rebounds en route to her sixth double-double of the season. She now is averaging 15.6 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average is the fourth best in the nation.
Southern leads the A-Sun in playing time, averaging 37.1 minutes per game. She is just one of three Lady Bisons to play more than 30 minutes a game. Cooper averages 33.6 mpg and freshman point guard Maya Dillard 32 mpg.
Following two-straight 20-plus point efforts, Sara Bliss scored 14 against JSU and is averaging 18.6 points in her last three games.
No. 16 Georgia is 10-0 on the year, 7-0 at home. Four Lady Bulldogs average double figures on the year, paced by Tiaria Griffin’s 15.4 points per game. Khaalidah Miller is pouring in 11.7, followed by Erika Ford’s 10.8.
Shacobia Barbee is averaging 10.8 points and a team-leading 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Lady Bulldogs outscore opponents by 21.4 points per game, averaging 70.1 points a contest and giving up just 48.7 points.
Lipscomb and Georgia met for the first time in the series history in 2012 with UGA winning 93-42. Sporting a No. 6 ranking, the Lady Bulldogs were the highest ranked opponent the Lady Bisons have faced in school history.
After Tuesday’s match-up, Lipscomb continues its road action in Dayton, Ohio for the Wright State Invitational Dec. 20-21. On Friday, the Lady Bisons face Bradley in a 3:30 p.m. tilt.
